The following general guidelines should help you answer some of the questions you may have in making your lighting decisions:
How do I determine the proper size chandelier for over a dining room table?
How high should I mount the wall lanterns around my front door?
How much light do I need in an area to light it properly?
To find out how much light you need in an area, multiply the length times the width of the room. Then multiply that number times 1.5. That gives you the amount of wattage you need for proper general lighting.
For a specific task lighting in areas where stronger light is needed, multiply the areas square footage by 2.5.
How do I determine the proper chandelier width for a foyer?
You should add the length and width of the foyer area. This will equal the proper diameter for most any chandelier you will need.
Two-story foyers will require a larger fixture. If there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside.
What's the best way to light a hallway?
Ceiling lights should be spaced every 8-10 feet. Wall sconces should be spaced every 6-8 feet and mounted about 60" from the floor.
How do I determine the proper size chandelier for over a dining room table?
You should add the length and width of the dining room. This will equal the proper diameter for most any chandelier you will need. If that doesn't appear to fit because of the size of your table, use the table width for the chandelier's diameter.
The bottom of the chandelier should be no lower than 30 inches above the table top.
How high should I mount the wall lanterns around my front door?
You should mount the wall lanterns approximately 66 inches above the bottom of the door, slightly above eye level.
What about the body height of the wall lanterns?
The body height of the lanterns depends on the height of your house's front entrance. Normal range for the lanterns would be from 1/5 to 1/6 of the entrance height.
What is the best way to light a bath or powder room?
If one light is used, figure either full width of the mirror or up to a foot smaller on each side. If you have a longer vanity with double sinks, consider using two smaller lights centered above each sink.
